Gewürztraminer 2023

$19.22

89 points, HJ Cha, Gismondi on Wine

Harvested from 30-year old vines at our estate vineyard on McLean Creek Road in Okanagan Falls. The alluvial and glacial deposits at this site make up a mix of gravel and sandy loam which is well-suited for this variety, allowing us to craft a beautifully aromatic, food-friendly Gewürztraminer.

Due to low yields this vintage, we produced only 200 cases of our 2023 Gewürztraminer.

    Winemaker Notes

The 2023 growing season was an interesting one that really started in early November 2022 when we had an abrupt shift from late summer to winter. Followed up by extremely cold temperatures in December, we went into 2023 with some apprehension. While our Pinot Noir seemed to fare quite well, our Chardonnay was significantly down. Bud break happened at a normal time for our vineyards in early May, after which we experienced a strong growth period. By early June, vine growth was quite advanced, and we were ahead of a typical season; flowering was three weeks ahead of the previous year and veraison began the last week of July. We prepared for an early harvest, which began on September 5th. While our crop was light, the quality was exceptional, and the flavours and acid balance were excellent, some of the best we’ve had here at Meyer.

    Vineyard Notes

The wine was crafted from a southwest-facing heritage block of vines planted on our estate “McLean Creek Road Vineyard” in 1994 with cuttings hailing from Germany. The vineyard is within the Okanagan Falls subgeographical indication (sub-Gi) which was designated in 2018 and recognized as being geologically unique in the production of wine grapes. It is comprised of alluvial and glacial deposits making up a mix of gravel and sandy loam and is well-suited to this variety, allowing us to craft a beautifully aromatic, food-friendly Gewürztraminer.

    Production Notes

The first batch of fruit harvested was loaded straight from the vineyard into the press and was slowly and gently whole bunch pressed to maximize juice quality without extracting harsh flavours. The later pick was destemmed and slightly crushed and left to soak with the skins for 24 hours, then gently pressed. Both lots were combined, and a long cool fermentation occurred in stainless steel vats and older seasoned French oak barrels lasting four weeks. The wine was left on its fine lees for a further four months. No malolactic fermentation occurred.
